Stress is unavoidable. It is part of the common human experience. There are many ways to cope with stress. Eating is a common way people self-soothe during times of stress. The act of eating can be very soothing, especially if it involves comfort foods that are sweet or salty. The problem with using food as our only de-stressor is usually the uncomfortable feelings that arise shortly after eating, such as, shame, guilt, anger or sadness. These types of emotions can sometimes further add to the stress we were trying to reduce in the first place.
